As budget discussions proceed, chances for a carbon price look good

By now, you've probably seen this recent New York Times article about CCL's preferred policy, carbon fee and dividend, being considered as part of the budget reconciliation bill. Our VP of Government Affairs, Danny Richter, has put out a new message underscoring what a big deal this reporting is.

He explains, "The policy we've been working on for more than 10 years is being reported on — in one of the most prominent newspapers in our country — with confirmation that the major players in the Senate are working on putting the policy together." In other words, Danny says, "This is huge!"

In his message to volunteers, Danny also touches on the state of the budget discussions in the House, which are still underway. He said, "Both moderates and progressives agree that the worst case is that Congress does nothing. So while I'd rather have not had this delay, I still think that a reconciliation bill stands a very good chance of happening."

Inclusion of carbon pricing in the reconciliation bill continues to look good, Danny said. Watch Danny's encouraging message now.

In other news this week:

Who supports a price on carbon? As we continue our campaign with Congress and the White House to enact carbon pricing, it’s important to point out the broad support this policy enjoys among the public, scientists, economists and elected officials. We now have a page on CCL’s website about that support, which you can refer to and share on social media or with your members of Congress.

Responding to negative press: Discussion about carbon pricing is picking up in the media, and we may see criticism emerging about the policy. To guide volunteers about when and how to push back on these critiques, we’ve posted this resource on CCL Community

Register for November virtual conference: We’re a little more than five weeks away from our November virtual conference, Grit & Gratitude, happening Nov. 13-14. The conference, featuring keynote speaker Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, provides an opportunity to celebrate this year’s accomplishments and prepare for the challenges ahead. Learn more and register here.

Big endorsement for Energy Innovation Act: To gain support for the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, CCL volunteers have generated thousands of endorsements for the legislation. One of the biggest endorsements came last month when California volunteers succeeded in getting the Los Angeles Unified School District, second largest in the country, to endorse the bill.

Carbon pricing in Spanish media: CCLers Iona Lutey and Mark Reynolds recently published a Spanish-language op-ed in New York’s El Diario about the importance of finding climate solutions after hurricane-caused flooding damaged New York. Additionally, CCLers had a Spanish-language interview on La Voz Radio, discussing the impact that climate change has on urban areas.

Take action this week

If you have a little time: Continue to reach out to the White House and let the President know that you want a price on carbon. We have set a goal of 20,000 contacts to the White House by October 15, and we are over halfway there. Once you have contacted the White House, please share this action with your family and friends.

If you have a little more time: Join our online October national meeting this Saturday. Our guest speaker will be Utah state legislator Ray Ward, who co-signed an op-ed earlier this year with two dozen other Utah Republicans endorsing a carbon fee and dividend. The call will be on October 9 at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET. Learn more and add to your own calendar

You can also connect with your nearest CCL chapter to take action in your community, or join one of CCL’s national online Action Teams to take action on specific topics like agriculture, health, faith, and more.

Track your trainings and 5th lever expansion

As CCL grows and learns more about volunteer engagement, we are expanding our fifth lever of political will to encompass "Chapter and Volunteer Development." Why? Since last year’s launch of the CCL Action Tracker, the second-most requested update has been to provide a way for volunteers to log CCL trainings they've taken. Since training is an act of developing yourself as a CCL volunteer, you’ll notice these changes across CCL Community, the Action Tracker, and on our main website starting today.

There are many benefits, including:

  1. Providing volunteers the chance to track their trainings, see completed trainings at-a-glance, and encourage everyone to deepen their knowledge by taking additional trainings.
  2. Deepening our overall understanding of volunteer engagement while providing our Education Team with insights into how to improve CCL’s training program.
  3. For the future, it will provide CCL leaders and staff with more insight into their volunteers’ interests and trainings they’ve taken.

More information is provided in this week’s CCL Community Release Notes.
