The coruscating evening light set his auburn hair aflame. “Cheers,” I said and invited him to continue with the game of putting words to Sudbury and what the city means; to him, and me, to anyone who sits and thinks and dreams.

“Bugs, rocks, snow and ice, that says it all,” he said, and he raised his glass and smiled at me as he laughed and shook his head.

“You miss the most important things,” I cried, leaning in my chair. “You’ve missed the warmth of all the people that live and laugh out there. Caring hearts and ready smiles and time to share with you. The Northern heart of Sudbury beats strong and sure and true.”

Who cares about bugs and rocks and ice, and winters that are long? When springtime blooms and fields and trees are filled with northern song?

I’ve lived in many lands, my friend, and many years gone by, but Sudbury is home to me and where my bones will lie. Old loves may go and new loves come and life keeps moving on, but this fair town will still be here when you and I have gone.

Premier lying to voters about economic impact of carbon prizing

Premier Doug Ford’s political PR ballyhoo is wonderfully clarifying. It is proof positive that he will bold face lie to stir up fear to gain support for his cause.

He has no interest in coming clean with two truths: his climate change plan is ineffectual; economic analyses galore conclude a price on carbon will not throw our economy into a recession.

A frisson ran down my spine, however, when I heard his unsubstantiated claims on television. I can only hope that people resist the emotional pull of his dime-a-dozen, fear-mongering tactic and instead check the facts for themselves. Kudos to economists Sabrina Kim and Trevor Combe for calling a spade a spade.
