Canada's Supreme Court upholds carbon pricing; CCL volunteers held hundreds of lobby meetings last week

We want to show President Biden how popular carbon fee and dividend is, so CCL is asking volunteers to send 3,000 postcards to the White House for our April action. And here’s the good news: MyPostcard, the service we’re using to make and deliver the cards, is donating the 3,000 postcards, which normally are $3 apiece.

Why postcards? We live in an age where most communication is done digitally — social media, text, email. Going old school with snail mail will help our message rise above the noise. We’re aiming to have the postcards delivered by Earth Day (April 22), when Biden will host a virtual climate summit with world leaders. Plus, now is a great time to make your voice heard, since the White House is announcing its plans for jobs, infrastructure, and climate. (Read more about that here.)

The whole process can be done on your smartphone. Complete instructions for downloading the app, accessing the $3 credit, and creating and sending your postcard can be found here. After your postcard is sent, log it in the Action Tracker (found on your dashboard on CCL Community), share your postcard on social media, and invite friends and family to send a postcard, too.

If you’d rather not use the app, go ahead and send your own postcard to the White House.

We’re already doing tremendous work building support for carbon pricing in Congress. Let’s flood the White House with postcards to show the president that Americans support a price on carbon with a dividend sent to households!

Carbon pricing win in Canada: Last week, Canada’s Supreme Court ruled the federal government was on solid legal ground when it imposed a carbon tax on individual provinces. The policy, which utilizes a fee-and-dividend system, currently prices carbon at the equivalent of $24 per ton in U.S. dollars, and the government recently decided to increase the price to $135 by 2030. Lobbying: Chapters hold hundreds of meetings

Last week, thousands of CCL volunteers held virtual meetings with House and Senate offices to build support for carbon pricing that gives revenue to households. Amy Bennett, CCL’s Director of Congressional Liaisons and Lobby Days, reports that as of Tuesday we had 380 meetings scheduled. Of those, 70 were face-to-face meetings with House and Senate members.

As we do with all lobbying, volunteers submit minutes of the meetings held, and these notes help our D.C. staff to gauge where things stand on Capitol Hill with the legislation we support. So far, 262 reports have been submitted, and Amy is hoping the remaining reports will soon be filed. Many volunteers tweeted about their meetings, like the one with Rep.
