U.S. Chamber support
for carbon pricing
could have big impact

In a major policy shift, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce last week said it "supports a market-based approach to accelerate greenhouse gas emissions reductions across the U.S. economy." An official with the Chamber told the Washington Examiner that it considers a carbon tax or cap-and-trade to be a market-based approach.

The pro-business Chamber is extremely influential with members of Congress, and the decision to back carbon pricing could open the door to more members from both parties supporting legislation like the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act.

“The U.S. Chamber represents many major American corporations. We are glad to see them recognize this is a solution that works for people, the planet, and businesses,” said Kyle Kammien, Senior Business Relations Representative for Citizens’ Climate Lobby. “Their stance will help build more support in Congress for a durable, bipartisan climate solution.”

For CCL chapters that would like to leverage this news, we’ve prepared a local press release template you can use to get the word out to media in your area.

If you have a little time: Sign up to be a caller in CCL’s Monthly Calling Campaign to help create a steady drumbeat of calls to Congress about climate change. Our goal is for every member of Congress to receive a call about climate change every day. Sign up at cclusa.org/mcc, and then share the link with a friend on social media or via email.

If you have more time: Join our webinar with Rhodes Scholar and CCL volunteer Garima Desai, who will teach about the tone we use when talking to people about climate. Tone is the way a speaker uses their words to actually connect with people.  The webinar, hosted by the Presenters and Schedulers Action Team, takes place at 9 p.m. ET on Jan. 28. RSVP and add to your own calendar.

You can also connect with your nearest CCL chapter to take action in your community, or join one of CCL’s national online Action Teams to take action on specific topics like agriculture, health, faith, and more.

Browse CCL Community’s Event Calendar to find upcoming events, trainings, and calls you can join.
Media: CCLer gets message out on NPR

CCL volunteer Katherine Clemo was listening to NPR’s 1A show this week when the topic was “The Climate for the Fight Against Climate Change.” The show invites listeners to send questions and comments, and so Katherine emailed the following, which was read aloud toward the end of the show: “I would like for Biden to do everything possible to get the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (H.R. 763) passed. This is NOT a tax. It is a fee and the money coming from the fee would go to the low and middle income Americans every month.” Thanks to Katherine’s quick thinking, the Energy Innovation Act got exposure to a huge nationwide audience.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. If you’d like to learn more about how to pull the media lever, watch or read this training on preparing for media interviews.
