City of Victoria Signs Our Open Letter

On Earth Day 2017, Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL) began inviting businesses, cities, and associations to sign an open letter to the government of Canada regarding its national carbon pricing plan. The open letter supports the Pan-Canadian Clean Growth and Climate Plan in principle, while strongly encouraging the federal government to provide a predictable and rising price on carbon. The letter also calls for clarity on the comprehensiveness of the plan and for the implementation of border tax adjustments.

We’re excited to announce that the City of Victoria, British Columbia, recently signed our Open Letter. They join the City of Toronto and 242 businesses from across Canada who also signed the open letter. Thank you to CCL volunteers Jan Slakov and Jan Inglis and Councillor Ben Isitt for making this happen!

Our elected members of Parliament are much more likely to take stronger action on the climate crisis if there is documented support from the cities and businesses which they represent. We plan to again present this signed open letter to Members of Parliament when CCL volunteers gather in Ottawa from October 13-16, 2018 for our fifth annual conference and lobbying days.

For more information about the open letter read our FAQ.

Count my business/organization. We want to sign now!

CCL Hamilton and Lanark County Recharged

In 2018, our volunteers are focusing on growing our groups locally and expanding nationally. Below are a couple examples of CCL chapters being recharged.

CCL Hamilton was one of the first of our groups outside of Sudbury to become part of CCL Canada in 2011. Several years later, their stoic leader, Dante Ryel, moved to other endeavours and the group lost its energetic core. Happily, our CCL leader in Milton ON, engineer Yannick Trottier, connected with a crew of engineering students at McMaster University. With the help of the new CCL Hamilton Leader, Amar Maharaj, and CCL Toronto members Liz Couture and Tom Cullen,Yannick trained new CCL Hamilton members on February 23, 2018. Welcome Ainhoa, Amar, Bassel Danish, Darshan, Ginni, Heather, Mathieu, Neel, Nishant, Parminder, Roomana, Swasti, and Viktor to CCL. You are all going to make a huge difference.

In Lanark County Ontario, CCL Leader Anita Payne, led a Climate Action Training to recharge her group on Monday, March 12, 2018. Welcome Noelle, Bruce and Mike. Anita had something in mind before she trained them. That same week they lobbied their local MP and MPP!

Ontario Election 2018  - Climate Action Counts

The following statements are not hyperbole: the window to address this crisis is rapidly closing and Ontario and Canada’s climate policies are woefully inadequate to preserve a climate similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted. Conversely and happily, a multi-trillion business opportunity awaits the jurisdictions with the best climate policies.

And that is why we exist at CCL - to create the political will for a liveable world. Thus, we have prepared a survey of the four major parties’ climate platforms in Ontario’s election. The media release for the survey can be found here.

Stay tuned for information about an upcoming online conference for CCL Ontario, featuring Mark Cameron from Canadians for Clean Prosperity. We will review the results of the survey with CCL volunteers, give them tips on how to ask questions at town halls and debates during the election, and empower each other to write letters to the editor. The date is yet to be finalized but it will be the last week of April or first week of May.

CCL Canada National Conference Now Confirmed

Circle the date. It is confirmed! Our national conference and lobbying days will be October 13 to 16, 2018. For a second year in a row, the conference will be held at the Marriott Residence Inn in the Parliamentary Precinct District area at 161 Laurier W. Ottawa ON.

Look for registration details in our April newsletter.

Laser Talk - The Impact of Climate Change on Wildfires in Canada

As our season shifts and snow is melting, those of us in areas prone to wildfires are wondering what kind of summer awaits us. How is climate change affecting wildfires in Canada? Will it continue to get worse?

Timid Budget Recipe for Climate Catastrophe - Political Will is the Missing Ingredient to Save Our Climate

On February 27, 2018, Canada’s Finance Minister, the Honourable Bill Morneau tabled the 2018 Federal Budget. Unprecedented and at the same time, up in the Arctic circle ice was melting in the dead of winter alarming scientists. Thus, the big question is: How does Budget 2018 measure-up for climate action?

The 2017 Budget pointed Canada in the right direction but the 2018 Budget is timid and does little to bend Canada’s emissions curve.

Political will is the missing ingredient that will save our climate. Thus, it will be up to all of us to preserve a climate similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted.

Featured Letter To The Editor

When planning an event, a lot of energy is often taken up promoting the event in advance. Writing something after an event is another way to continue to highlight the issue.

This month we feature a piece written by CCLers from Nelson - West Kootenay after a letter writing event they hosted. They submitted it to their local paper, where it was published as a letter to the editor (LTE). The LTE starts:

“I’m writing letters because I’m concerned about my children’s future,” replied Jayme Jones when asked why she was participating in Castlegar’s first Write for the Climate event.
