WISE CHOICE
Re: 16-year-olds and the vote. Nice to see our provincial government MLAs are slightly smarter than the majority of our city council.

PAVED WITH GOLD
What in the blue blazes is this Notley socialist government trying to pull now? They have handed the highways maintenance contract from the now defunct Carillion directly over to the B.C. company, Emcon. Thus side stepping and without any consideration for Alberta companies such as Ledcor and Volker Stevin. Provincial regulations stipulate that the provincial government must give Alberta companies the first shot at highways work even if the existing contract has not yet expired. This means that Alberta taxpayers will now be on the hook for an expensive lawsuit as well. I find this to be an outrageous act of betrayal by the Notley Crew against our own province. Turns out Notley and her Socialist B.C. brethren have been deceiving Albertans all along. Might as well face it, folks, there is an under-the-table, unholy alliance between Notley and John Horgan, (the premier of our unneighbourly neighbouring province), the fruits of which is causing tremendous damage to Alberta, its workers (including non-union workers), its home-grown companies, and Alberta taxpayers. Thoroughly disgusting. Am I just an angry old man? I sure as hell am! My children and grandchildren have staked their future on this province. I don’t like to wish time away but the next election can’t come soon enough.
MATT HUDSON

RIGHT AND WRONG
Mr. Robert McMechan says things under the NDP are “way better than four years ago”. Robert, the only ones that are way better off now are our creditors — $80 billion of debt in four short years! If the NDP were to get re-elected, we would go from no debt to the region with the highest debt per capita in North America. We would beat the left in Ontario in only eight years! I’m sure Robert has rationalized this, as socialists always do. The fact that my children will have annual payments of billions in interest is no matter because he is owed his free stuff. I’m currently in Vancouver and just filled up at $1.50/litre because of B.C.’s voice of the left. Perhaps Robert would like to see if our socialist NDP can jack our gas prices higher than the socialist B.C. NDP so he can get even more free stuff.

SEE THIS BEFORE
Just a thought in regards to Victoria’s decision to remove the statue of Sir John A. Macdonald. Not so long ago, people, possibly even the some of the same people who support this, were up in arms when the Taliban destroyed historical monuments in Afghanistan. Just saying.

TAKING ADVANTAGE
We should be absolutely outraged by this wages and pension scam that is happening in all levels of our government. In the days past, government employees were paid a bit less than private sector, therefore some benefits and a decent pension was introduced to offset the disadvantage. Fast forward to today and look what we’ve got. Government employees earn 10%-30% more than in the private sector and benefits with a pension, an adjustment bonus, severance packages and golden parachutes reach heights that are obscene. How arrogant is it to think that is OK, and perfectly justified, that after several years in a cushy, well overpaid, benefits-laced government job, you can retire with thousands of dollars a month pension plus get a bonus for retirement, and keep most of the benefits, while us “the peasants” who are working and paying for all that for 30-50 years get none of that. This is absolutely repulsive.

SMOKE AND MIRRORS
Your headlines in Thursday’s paper is priceless and, of course, phony. Of course Trudeau will not back down because he hasn’t done anything on this Saudi Arabia issue. Easy to spout off a few words but much harder to take action. On the bigger issue here at home with the pipelines, he has caved in to the enviros and the politicians allowing them to dictate the agenda on this important issue. Instead, he has made us, the taxpayer, pay for the pipeline at what could be a cost that would be much greater than if he had not put in so many roadblocks to the private companies in all three of the pipeline proposals we watched go up in smoke. Furthermore, he did not have the guts to tell Donald Trump to his face what he thought of the U.S. in their trade and tariffs position. He instead waited till he until he was safe behind the podium and could not be challenged and could continue his bravado performance. Again, all smoke and mirrors. All talk and no action.

FAKE FIGHT
Anthony Furey it totally correct about the Saudi-Canadian ‘controversy’ — it is indeed manufactured. Nevertheless, the acting is just as much by Justin Trudeau as by the Saudi government in Riyadh. He wants to pretend he seriously challenges the deplorable human rights records of places like Saudi Arabia. What a laugh! For years, critics of Trudeau have rightfully pointed out his lightweight feminism and LGBT advocacy. This virtue-signalling media style lambastes (or prosecutes) Canadians who do not use made-up gender pronouns, but ignores institutional hatred and brutality against women and gay people according to certain interpretations of Islam, both within Canada and throughout the Middle East. Trudeau’s parlay with Riyadh is a case of pathetic style over real substance. Give the Liberals two weeks and they will be back to their usual human rights and women’s rights fare, like complaining about manspreading and mansplaining on the subway systems of Toronto and Montreal.

LOOK AT THE STATS
Re: Page 5 “Carbon Tax Tide Turning”, Rick Bell, Aug. 3, 2018. Yeah Rick, we know that you’ve got Jason Kenney’s talking points memorized. But you, like Jason, never got around to mentioning that last year’s top-performing provinces were the four that have been pricing carbon … including Alberta. Neither you nor Jason talk about his alternative means of cutting emissions to help get Canada to PM Stephen Harper’s target of 30% reductions by 2030. And neither of you mention the fact that economists widely agree that putting a price on carbon is the most cost-effective means of tackling climate change — cheaper than regulations, and far cheaper than using taxpayer dollars to pick up the pieces after the floods, droughts, wildfires and heat waves which are becoming more frequent and more deadly as the planet warms.

SUNNY SIDE UP
And yet another negative Nelly, Paul Baumberg, just like Barry Banek, whine, complain, snivel, the NDP is destroying the province, bigger government, social manipulation, leading us around by the nose, how? Fellas, explain your position, give us an example. The government is not any bigger, how have they tried to tell you how you should live your life? How are they making things worse? The economy is improving, unemployment is down, Rachel Notley has done everything she can to get pipelines built, promote our oil industry, promote Alberta. Is it because of the carbon tax? Wake up, fellas, that is reality, the whole world is going green, it’s not just a fad, it’s not going away. That’s not telling you how to live your life, it’s telling you how life is. Alberta has great green energy opportunities, with our sunshine, the wind, nuclear opportunities, and our oil industry making adjustments to fit in. Why so negative guys? Tell us what you mean, don’t just whine, and complain, and tell us how bad it is , tell us why you think it’s so bad.
ROBERT J. McMECHAN
(Glad you are so inspired, Robert. Not everyone feels the same way.)
